The Film 'Together' Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

Here's a test for long-term couples who are fans of horror films: Settle in with your loved one and stream Together. The independent film success of 2025 has now made its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. At first glance, it might appear like conventional physical horror, but inside Together resides a intense examination about the ways we decide to love each other.

An Introductory Film Delving into Relationship Dynamics

Together marks the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for over ten years. Having wed in reality in 2017, the two stars contribute a unique chemistry to their portrayals, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a enduring union.

The narrative commences when Tim and Millie move from the metropolis to the countryside for her career. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, sure, but that’s mostly where the cliches end. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While trekking near their new home, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim discover an subterranean cavern. After spending the night there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence starts to affect the duo. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past simple connection.

The entire film is a methodically building fright fest, interspersing moments of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something horrific). The director orchestrates these parts seamlessly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Nuanced Portrayals

A large part of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they deftly portray numerous complexities to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a emotional and physical gap. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.

Tim, on the other hand experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and distant from his social circle. He is terrified of the idea of totally forfeiting his individual identity in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he can’t drive and is dependent on Millie for transportation.

Shanks’ smartest move in Together avoids making Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.

Both characters grapple with the kind of problems that come with long-term unions over a long period. At their core, they continue to care for one another. They share moments of joy, offer support, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an persistent feeling of questioning about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together represent these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to another person, the symbolism does not come across as clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s final act, which is best experienced firsthand, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. It has been said that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. Conversely, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them make up.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own reaction could function as a telling indicator of how you view relationships. Will the conclusion plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply turn to your other half and utter, “We could get through that together”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is streaming on Hulu now.
